This procedure applies to installing a printer connected to a CUPS printer server (e.g. damasio at ISLab) in a Windows XP machine. Here it goes:

  1. Go to the Printers and faxes control panel, and then click Add printer
  2. At the wizard, select Local printer and disable the automatical detection checkbox
  3. Then select Create a new port with type Standard TCP/IP Port
  4. Enter the server IP (rather than the hostname!), e.g. 10.0.2.9 for damasio.
  5. At the Device type, select Custom and click Settings
  6. Set the Protocol to LPR, and enter the queue name (you must know this beforehand, e.g. Eva for Eva printer at ISLab)
  7. Select the appropriate manufacturer and model from the list (e.g. HP LaserJet 1220 PS for Eva)
  8. And finally set the printer name to something meaningful

(In fact, this procedure applies to all printers/servers using the LPD protocol)
