The Nao robot.

Nao is a humanoid robotic platform developed by Aldebaran Robotics. The robot is approximately 58 cm tall and weighs about 5 kg.

Crude instructions for running a demo

  • Extract Nao from the box
  • Put it in sitting position, with the arms resting on the knees (like in the picture shown here)
  • To turn it on, press the button on its chest
  • Wait until the three LEDs on each ear light up.
  • When the robot is fully ready it says something.
  • There are 5 buttons used to trigger demos:
    • Button Head, back: commands Nao to sit.
    • Button Head, center: commands Nao to stand up. It works when Nao is sitting or is lying on the floor with its back or its front.
    • Button Head, front: commands Nao to play tai chi. It works only when Nao is standing.
    • Right hand: commands Nao to wave his hand and greet people.
    • Left hand: commands Nao to walk ~60cm.
  • To turn Nao off, you need to press the button on the chest (completely) for a few seconds. There is an intermediate pressure level for that button, I'm not sure what that does.
  • You can make Nao fall either to the front or to the back while he's standing, BUT YOU NEED TO CATCH IT, PREVENTING IT TO HIT THE GROUND TOO HARD. It makes a sound when falling and assumes a pose that is meant to protect it.
